Government Asset Management Arena (GAMA) - July 13

The GAMA is a government agency network established to improve the asset management of Queensland's built assets. It provides agency representatives with current and emerging issues, which allows them to manage their assets efficiently and effectively in line with the Government's priorities.

At the July GAMA Thayaparan Gajendran, Research Leader, CRC for Construction Innovation and Associate Lecturer at The University of Newcastle will present:

'Construction Supply Chains and the Asset Manager'

- how ICT developments in the construction industry may impact on asset and facility management

The construction industry is often criticised for the lack of initiatives to improve practices and productivity. One major criticism is the fragmented nature of the industry, which leads to inefficient communication among project teams. Among the solutions intended to address this issue, the uptake of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) was widely anticipated increase the effectiveness of project delivery. However, it has been established that although the uptake of ICT to automate business processes has given productivity gains, the full potential of ICT to integrate operations along supply chains is not widespread.

Meanwhile, the involvement of Facilities Managers (FM) throughout the building life cycle has come to include the design and construction phases as well as the operational phase due to the changing nature of procurement processes, through mechanisms such as Public Private Partnerships, Design Construct and Manage. Emphasis on service provision increasingly requires FM input during early stages of the project. ICT has the potential to optimise such inputs, but only where other project team members can engage to a similar level. Therefore, it is essential that FM understand the Critical Success Factors that need to be addressed to maximise the likelihood of ICT integration of supply chain operations. This presentation will highlight the CSF identified for the major participants of the supply chain. It also will demonstrate how a Best Practice Guide Produced by CRC-CI can be used to self evaluate the readiness of an organisation in terms of ICT integration.
